Best OpenRouter alternatives in 2026
By Dhrumil Barot, Founder. Dhrumil is an AI inference and LLM infrastructure expert. Dhrumil built Vynaris to make model access, routing and pricing simple and transparent for developers. Published . Updated .
The best OpenRouter alternatives in 2026 are Vynaris, LiteLLM, Portkey, Requesty, Vercel AI Gateway, Cloudflare AI Gateway and Together AI. Pick Vynaris if you want a gateway that routes each request to the cheapest model eligible for the task and shows a receipt for it, at a 3% then 1% fee. Pick LiteLLM to self-host, Vercel AI Gateway for zero token markup, or Cloudflare AI Gateway for a free control plane. Every price below was checked on the vendor’s own site on October 14, 2026.
Key takeaways
- Vynaris is best for automatic routing to the cheapest eligible model, with a per-request receipt. Its fee is 3% on your first $500 each month, then 1%.
- LiteLLM is best if you must run the gateway yourself. The open-source version is free to self-host.
- Vercel AI Gateway has the lowest fee on this list: it states no markup and no platform fee on tokens.
- OpenRouter’s own pricing page lists a 5.5% platform fee on Standard and 8% on Business, so fees are the clearest reason to compare.
- OpenRouter still wins on breadth (500+ models) and on Enterprise controls. Our fee math post shows when that matters.
What an OpenRouter alternative is (and is not)
OpenRouter is a hosted gateway: one API key and one OpenAI-style endpoint in front of many model providers. Its pricing page lists 500+ models from 80+ providers on paid plans, a free tier of 25+ free models limited to 50 requests a day, and bring-your-own-key use with $25,000 of list-price inference a month before a 5% fee (source). A real alternative does the same job for your application: one endpoint, many models, one bill or one set of keys.
Some entries here are gateways you host yourself, one is a control plane that sits in front of your own provider keys, and one is a model provider that serves its own catalog. We include Together AI because many people who search for an OpenRouter alternative really want cheaper open-weight inference. It is not a gateway, and we say so in its entry. Existing deep dives cover the architecture and cost side: LiteLLM vs OpenRouter vs managed gateways (TCO), three ways to route LLM requests and the OpenRouter Auto cost and quality audit. This page is the short list.
How we compared
- Fee: what you pay on top of the model’s own price, as stated on the vendor’s pricing page.
- Coverage: how many models and providers the vendor says it supports.
- Routing: whether it only forwards requests, or also chooses the model or provider for you.
- Hosting: hosted by the vendor, self-hosted, or both.
- Cost visibility and governance: per-request cost data, budgets, keys, SSO and audit features.
As of October 2026. We did not benchmark latency or answer quality for these products, so this page makes no speed or quality claims. We run Vynaris, so we list our own limits too.
The list
1. Vynaris, best for routing to the cheapest eligible model
Vynaris is an OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible gateway. You change the base URL and set the model to auto. Each request starts in a frontier-quality pool and routes down to a cheaper model only when exact-version eval evidence clears a quality gate for that task. If it does not, the request goes to the model you would have used anyway. That is the main difference from a gateway that only forwards what you ask for.
- Fee: 3% on your first $500 of monthly usage, then 1%. Model cost is the provider list price for the model that served the request (pricing).
- Receipts: the served model and exact cost come back in response headers, with a CSV ledger you can export.
- Funding: prepaid top-ups from $20 that do not expire, or $20, $45 and $150 monthly plans that become credit. Requests stop when the balance reaches zero, so there are no overages.
- Reliability refunds on every plan, privacy-restricted providers by default, and no training by Vynaris.
- Payment: card, local methods, stablecoins, or Monero at +20%. See Vynaris vs NanoGPT for the Monero details.
- Good to know: the routing pool is curated for quality and price rather than a 500-model catalog.
Best suited for: teams whose bill is mostly agent and tool-call traffic that does not need a frontier model every time, and who want proof of what each request cost. Run your own numbers in the cost calculator or read the OpenRouter vs Vynaris fee comparison.
2. LiteLLM, best for self-hosting
LiteLLM is an open-source AI gateway and Python SDK from BerriAI. Its site describes one OpenAI-compatible API to 140+ providers and 1,800+ models, with virtual keys, teams, budgets, rate limits, spend tracking and fallbacks (source).
- Price: the open-source gateway is $0 and self-hosted. Enterprise is annual and, per its pricing page, sized to request capacity and support needs, never per token (source).
- Enterprise adds SSO and SCIM, audit logs, secret managers and up to 24/7 support.
- Trade-off: you deploy, scale and patch the proxy yourself.
Best suited for: platform teams that need the gateway inside their own network, with their own keys and no per-token fee. Our TCO post models the hosting cost.
3. Portkey, best for observability and prompt management
Portkey calls itself a control panel for production AI. Its plans are priced by recorded logs rather than by tokens (source).
- Developer: free, 10k recorded logs a month, described by Portkey as not suitable for production workloads.
- Production: $49 a month, 100k recorded logs, with $9 per additional 100k requests.
- Enterprise: custom pricing, with SSO, private cloud and VPC hosting, and compliance options.
- All plans include a universal API, fallbacks, load balancing and retries. An open-source gateway is listed for self-hosting.
- The pricing page does not list a per-token fee or a model catalog size.
Best suited for: teams that already have provider accounts and mainly want logs, traces, guardrails and prompt versioning in front of them.
4. Requesty, best for EU data residency on pay as you go
Requesty is a hosted gateway with 600+ models behind one OpenAI-compatible endpoint (source).
- Price: pay as you go at 5% on model cost, so a $10 per 1M token model costs $10.50. No per-seat pricing and no minimum spend.
- Free tier: free models only, 200 requests a day.
- Routing policies, caching, fallbacks and EU data residency are listed on every plan; Enterprise adds SSO, RBAC, audit logs and custom SLAs.
- Bring your own keys is available on pay as you go.
Best suited for: teams that want an OpenRouter-shaped product with EU data residency and a flat 5% fee.
5. Vercel AI Gateway, best for zero token markup
Vercel’s AI Gateway gives one API key to hundreds of models and states “no markup on tokens” (source). Its pricing docs say there is no markup and no platform fee, and you pay the provider’s list price from purchased credits (source).
- Free tier: a monthly credit that covers a subset of models, with lower rate limits.
- Bring your own key is available on the paid tier with no gateway fee.
- You are responsible for payment processing fees, except on Enterprise invoicing, which has none.
- Works with the OpenAI Chat Completions, OpenAI Responses and Anthropic Messages APIs, plus the AI SDK, with automatic fallbacks between providers.
Best suited for: teams on Vercel or the AI SDK who want the lowest fee and are happy to choose their own models.
6. Cloudflare AI Gateway, best for caching and analytics on Cloudflare
Cloudflare AI Gateway sits in front of your provider calls to add caching, rate limiting, analytics and fallbacks (source).
- Price: core features, meaning dashboard analytics, caching and rate limiting, are free on all plans (source).
- Unified Billing: a 5% fee applies to credits you buy, so $100 of credit is a $105 charge. Provider inference is passed through at the provider’s per-token rates.
- Guardrails are billed as Workers AI inference. Logging limits depend on plan and on when you created your first gateway.
- Dynamic routing and several other features are marked beta in its docs.
Best suited for: teams already on Cloudflare that want a free control plane in front of keys they hold.
7. Together AI, best for open-weight models (a provider, not a gateway)
Together AI serves its own catalog with per-token serverless pricing and an OpenAI-compatible endpoint at https://api.together.ai/v1 (source). Examples from its pricing page (source), per 1M input and output tokens: gpt-oss-120B at $0.15 and $0.60, DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731 at $0.14 and $0.28, GLM-5.3 at $1.40 and $4.40, and Kimi K3 at $3.00 and $15.00.
- No gateway layer: no cross-provider fallback or routing across vendors, because you are calling one provider.
- Batch pricing, cached-input pricing, dedicated endpoints and fine-tuning are listed on its pricing page.
Best suited for: workloads that run on open-weight models and want the provider price directly. See the cheapest LLM API guide for how these prices compare across tiers.

FAQ
What is the best OpenRouter alternative in 2026?
It depends on what you want to change. Vynaris is the best fit if you want the gateway to route each request to the cheapest model that is eligible for the task and show a receipt for it. LiteLLM is the best fit if you must self-host, and Vercel AI Gateway is the best fit if you want zero markup on tokens.
How much does OpenRouter charge?
OpenRouter's pricing page lists a 5.5% platform fee on the Standard plan and 8% on Business, with discounts on Enterprise. Its FAQ says the fee applies when you buy credits and that model token prices are passed through from the providers.
Is there an OpenRouter alternative with no fee at all?
Two options come close. Vercel AI Gateway states no markup and no platform fee on tokens, and LiteLLM's open-source gateway is free to self-host, though you pay for the servers you run it on. Cloudflare AI Gateway's core features are free, but its Unified Billing adds a 5% fee on credits you buy.
Can I self-host an OpenRouter alternative?
Yes. LiteLLM is open source and self-hosted, and Portkey lists an open-source gateway you can host yourself. Vynaris offers a self-hosted deployment on your own infrastructure through its Enterprise plan.
Do I need to rewrite my code to switch?
Usually not. Vynaris, Together AI and Vercel AI Gateway all document OpenAI-compatible endpoints, so the change is typically a new base URL and API key. Check each vendor's docs for the exact endpoint and model names before you switch.
When should I stay on OpenRouter?
Stay if you need its breadth, which its pricing page puts at 500+ models from 80+ providers, or its Enterprise features such as SSO/SAML. Our fee comparison walks through where OpenRouter wins and where the fee difference starts to matter.
